Friday Five: Ahead of Schedule

1. Buster and Belle were both asleep on the couch earlier tonight (so strange). Both of them had their legs simultaneously stretched out and curled around and cuddly. (How do they do that?) I thought, with such clarity and conviction as to be both startling and settling: These are my babies.

Weird, no?

2. I need to get much work done on The Thesis this weekend. The situation is rapidly approaching the category of DIRE. A. will be out of town ice-fishing in the northern part of the state so I should be able to hunker down and work. I hope.

3. I swear I heard A. mention to a friend on the phone that someone died going through the ice last week on the lake he will be fishing.

Dear God, how am I going to concentrate, what with all the fretting I will be doing?

4. I made Sloppy Joes for dinner tonight (Thursday). I used butter instead of oil. It was yummy. Here is the recipe for your own enjoyment. (Make them. They are YUMMY.)
A.'s Mom's Sloppy Joes

  • 1 1/2 lb. hamburger (we used ground moose)
  • 1/4 cup onion (I just eyeball it and use about half of an average yellow onion)
  • 2 T. shortening (I've never used shortening, used to use canola oil and just this time used butter. Mmmm... the smell of onions cooking in butter...SO GOOD)
  • 1 C. celery, diced
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. dry mustard
  • 1 C. catsup (How do you guys spell ketchup?)
  • 1 C. water
  • 2 T. vinegar
  • 2 T. lemon juice
  • 2 T. Worcestershire sauce

Brown hamburger and onion in the fat of your carefully informed choice. Add other ingredients. Simmer for 30 minutes.

5. Oh, how I love A. I am ridiculously fond of his nose. I remember, quite clearly, falling in love with that nose on our first date.

Doesn't he have a great, stupid, fake-for-the-camera grin? *sigh*

He had this picture filed under "family." Damn, I love this man. I sure hope all this butter keeps him around for a long, long time.

  1. I have to admit that I love sloppy joes.

  2. A lovely nose indeed! Isn't it funny how you can fall in love with "parts" (not the dirty ones, I mean maybe, but that's not specifically what I mean here).

I LOVE sloppy joes too, but we haven't made them in forever. Usually we just get the package of sloppy joe seasoning, but I'm going to have to try your recipe.

Also, I usually spell it ketchup, but I don't really understand if there is a difference beteween catsup and ketchup?

  3. He does have a nice nose. Good catch, you've got there! And my boyfriend files all of my emails under "Family", too, which I love.

Have a good weekend - happy thesis writing!

  4. Good luck with the thesis-writing. I think I'LL be fretting all weekend about the ice fishing trip!

Mmmm... I love Sloppy Joes (although the moose meat comment almost made me gag!) We do them with Veggie Ground Round (fake ground beef). Also, I "fry" onions in water. You'll have to keep adding the water (I use a squirt bottle like the kind ketchup is in at a diner), but I swear it does the job!

So sweet to hear you talk about A. You're clearly a woman in love!

  5. Dude. I love sloppy joes.

You and A sort of look alike in that picture! At any rate, you are both SO CUTE.

I haven't heard of anyone going through the ice this year in MN or anywhere else. It has been SO COLD, it's pretty thick I think.

    Also, TOTALLY KETCHUP.

  6. You guys are really, really cute. Especially A.'s nose. Happy birthday to A.!

  7. Good nose, A! It's funny you mention the nose thing; I have always adored Jim's nose, and really the noses of his entire family. I have never been... Fond, I guess, of my own nose. It does its job, but it has a few too many bumps and bulbous parts for my taste.
Luckily, it's looking like both the kids got his nose.
Also, I've always hated sloppy joes, but I've also always associated them with slop out of a can. Maybe I'll try this recipe and actually find I LIKE them.

  8. I love how you know that you fell in love with A's nose. So cute.

And I haven't eaten a sloppy joe in who-knows-how-long but gosh DARN it these sound good. Also, I'm strictly a KETCHUP girl, "catsup" always has me saying "cat-sup" in my head.

    Mmmm. Sloppy joes.

  9. I spell catsup ketchup.

Love the recipe, but a) they don't sell moose of any kind in our market, and b) I am mainly a vegetarian. But it sounds yummy. Except for the moose part.

Your are a great looking couple! You look so happy--like you just finished your thesis!
