Friday Five

1. My day started with A. delivering the news that the little Mountain Bluebird pair that had taken up residence in one of our birdhouses has been run off by the goddamn sparrows again. A tiny egg was on the lawn, smashed up, and the bird box was empty.

2. Does anyone know if it is possible to discourage sparrows from nesting/hanging out but still encourage other birds? Fucking sparrows.

3. I am pretty crabby today.

4. I am experiencing steady success with Weight Watchers. And yet, last night, I went off the rails. I just HAD to have a giant piece of cake, a beer, and of course, CHEESE. Now I have to be really good for five more days. Sometimes I am stupid.

5. I've been fly-fishing quite a bit already this season. We had virtually no snow in the area, so the rivers are not very high or fast. It is too bad, but it has extended the season!

My first catch of the season was a 16-inch cutthroat. Not bad!

Happy Friday to you!

  1. Don't beat yourself up too bad about one night! Everything in moderation. As long as you don't eat like that every night---or even every other night!---it's okay to enjoy yourself once in a while.

(Of course, if you are eating like that and not enjoying it, that's a whole other conversation to have with yourself.)

  2. I'm with Lisa. Do you know how many times I have ended up at Sanfords of all places for dinner? That is what your weekly points are for after all!

And speaking of cake, I told my hubby I am expecting one this week. After 3 months of WW, I am down 36 pounds. YOU CAN DO IT!!!

  3. I asked Mike about the sparrow/bluebird problem (he's been studying bluebirds recently), and he offers two alternatives:

    1. Shoot the sparrows. (Ugh, but as invasive species it's technically legal. I think. Maybe check on it if you go this route.)

    2. Try putting the bird boxes in a more wide-open place, like on a pole in the middle of a field. House sparrows will nest pretty much anywhere, but research shows that bluebirds do have a higher tolerance for wide open.

Of course, always dump out the sparrow nests, to reinforce the idea to the sparrows that this is a Bad Juju nesting spot.
