Cheese is Expensive

I still miss Buster so much. But, I am feeling a bit better. I do smile when I think of him, instead of cry every time.

++++

So. For the very first time in my life, I am going to try to lose weight. I don't say that as anything but a naked statement. I was pretty lucky to have the metabolism of a chipmunk for most of my life. That has, ahem, changed

I have joined Weight Watchers online. No way am I going to "meetings." Not an option. At all. A. is totally on board and helpful so far. Although, he brought a cookie home for me last night, which was sweet. He chirped, "It is a zero-point cookie!" He is a cutie.

I am clueless as to how to go about this. They seem to have a lot of articles and stuff so I think I will be able to figure it all out. I know quite a few people who have been on and remain on this plan, and it seems pretty healthy. So, that is good, I guess.

I am not going to lie: I do not have the best attitude. I do not mind cutting back on portions too much, but damn, I do mind having to pay attention to that yummy micro-brew beer I enjoy while watching the baseball game. And cheese. CHEESE! Cheese is so "point" expensive. CHEESE.

My concession today is to drink my coffee black. I just earned myself two points of cheese! I do not mind this too much. However, if this is how I am going to start my day at the office I will need to bring in some good coffee. Now I am looking forward to going to the local coffee roaster and picking out a couple of new coffees. I can't get anything too dark as my coworkers will likely freak out. I do not know the first thing about different kinds of roasts and beans, so this little project should keep my occupied for a while.

How about you? Have you ever tried to lose weight? I am certain my downfall is going to be in the evening, after dinner. I am pretty sure I snack a helluva lot.

Also, are any of you coffee connoissuers?

  1. Of the many diets I've tried, Weight Watchers is the one that made the most sense to me. I felt too as if it were training me to eat WITHOUT it later on. And I felt like I was learning concepts I knew already but hadn't internalized, such as "If you exercise more, you can eat more" and "If you give up something you don't care much about, you can have more of what you do care about."

  2. One of the many hats I wear at my job is Wellness Program Coordinator and Weight Watchers is the one commercial program we support. It really is a good system of input/food + more output/energy exercise = weightloss.

Cheese is so good! It's one of my favorite foods in the whole world. So many yummy varieties, and even stinky cheese is delicious! But hey, it's worthy points, full of protein and calcium.

I wish I could help you with the coffee question. I'll take it any way I can get it...even IV drip if necessary. A cup of folgers tastes just as good to me as a fancy starbucks.

    Good luck!

  3. Well, you KNOW how I love a good healthkick!! Weight Watchers works for a lot of people. I think it's a GREAT place for a first-timer to start.

Do you guys have Caribou up there? I love their coffee. Plus, if you brew it yourself you control the concentration.

  4. I don't have too much to offer on the diet front...my main strategy is to run, and, since an older metabolism and a super sedentary job have taken their toll, limiting my desserts and adult drinks to the weekend. I'm semi successful, meaning: stasis, mostly. All I want.

Re coffee: I drink my coffee black and I vastly prefer the darker roasts (Peet's Major Dickason's blend is a particular favorite right now, and I think this might be less dark than, say, French roast.) What really helps is the method of brewing (French press.) This might not work in an office situation, though.

  5. Kenny and I are also doing Weight Watchers right now. Kraft makes fat free cheese that are 1 point a serving. So you can still have it! Kenny is down 35 pounds and I have lost 21 since March 5th. If I can do it, so can you!

    1. Illy Coffee is the best in my opinion. I love it. It's expensive. I drink only 1 cup per day so rationalize the cost that way. After returning from a vacation in Italy, all US coffee tasted terrible to us. We tried LOTS of different brands. Lavazza was good but still not quite there. Then we found Illy and have never tried another.

I've found that mixing a can of decaf and a can of darkest roast results in the best flavor. It's all about the flavor. And, I don't mix two cans, I just use the scoop to get an equal portion of both. So, that's my recommendation.

Good luck with the diet, Tress.

  6. As someone who is at this very moment happily plowing through a block of sharp cheddar, I send you much sympathy. Cheese might actually rate over chocolate for me, most days. Doesn't hurt that it pairs so well with wine, another necessity.
A friend of mine's mother, who had four kids, did a month or two of Weight Watchers regularly, every year or so, to keep her weight on track and to remind her about healthy habits. She always looked really good to me, trim but not weirdly skinny. So I think it's a very nice, balanced plan that incorporates pretty well into normal life.

  7. i am also in a "man i really need to do SOMETHING about... this..." situation right now. my problem with WW (i assume - i've never formally done it) and the free calorie tracker i'm using now is that they seem more geared toward prepared foods, and i make too much of mine. homemade veal tomato cream sauce & pasta? PROBABLY a lot of points. but i have no way to tell! spinach salad topped with sauteed veggies & smoked salmon? PROBABLY ok for me.. but salmon also probably is a lot of points, and the homemade dressing i use has a bunch of olive oil, and maybe the truffle salt i added to the sauteed veggies has points? I HAVE NO CLUE.

  8. Try brushing your teeth after dinner. It can really help you avoid evening snacking. (Plus it's good for your teeth!)
