Recommendations

I am working on another post, one that I want to get right. In the meantime, I really need from you:

a) some great chick lit recommendations;

b) some recommendations for gym music; and

c) your latest movie recommendations (this is the most important!!).

Go!

  1. Have you read Laurie Notaro's books? They are a quick and hilarious read.

I am sort of digging that Cupid Shuffle song (by...Cupid). Which is DUMB and possibly the new Macarena, and I DO NOT CARE.

  2. I love Marian Keyes for chick lit. They are fun and funny and pretty well written.

I hate to say this, but Miley Cyrus is perfect for the gym because she is so bouncy and catchy. Particularly "See You Again."

I haven't SEEN any movies for a long time. Sorry! I know that was your most important one.

  3. Hmm, I think you should post and tell us what kind of music and movies you tend to like, cause I have no idea! I will recommend the movie "Into the Wild" to anyone and everyone, though, because it is AWESOME.

  4. Hmmm. I haven't read too much chick lit, so I can't help you there.

I just downloaded Robyn's "Cobrastyle" and it'll be perfect for the gym. I also like "Paralyzer" by Finger Eleven, and if you want a laugh while you're working out, try "Die Hard" by Guyz Nite. It's got a good beat and I promise you WILL NOT be able to get it out of your head for months. (Plus, you can hear the word "motherf-er" while working out!)

Movies: We really, really liked "Vantage Point."

  5. Don't read much chic lit, but gym music I've got DOWN! I agree with the post for See You Again. I'm mildly obsessed with that song - still.

I'm really into house music right now for running on the treadmill. I HATE the treadmill, but it helped me train for the Boulder Boulder and the only way I could get through it was with lots of caffeine and lots of house music!

Also, check out workout podcasts on iTunes. They used to have one for running. There were various mixes (house) for endurance, speed training, etc.

  6. ooh, some of my favorite questions...

    1. Chick lit. The two things I've read most recently and loved are High Fidelity--this is kind of like chick lit for boys, actually. Or boy lit for chicks. Or something. But fun. And then I also read a novel by Denise Mina..uh, wait, that's not so much chick lit as "gory crime lit." But also good! And about a chick! But maybe not comforting in the same way that good chick lit is.

    2. Uhhh. Not so good with the tunes questions.

    3. Some of my recent favorite netflix rentals have been In Her Shoes, Juno, The Savages (tho some people in my household complained that this was "slow"), and also that BBC TV series 7 Up, about the kids that they've interviewed every seven years since age seven (I think they're up to age 49 by now). I LOVE these, although I don't recommend sitting down to watch them all the way through one after another.

  7. Okay, I am back from my lunch workout and I will add:

To the song list: Mercy by Duffy

To the movie list: We just saw What Happens in Vegas, and it was cute/funny. I mean, no great EPIC, obviously, but if you are looking for something kind of light. It fits the bill. Plus, Ashton Kutcher is kind of hot(ish) in it, which is weird because I don't normally find him attractive.

  8. I saw Sex and The City last night and thought it was awesome. OBVIOUSLY. Other than that, haven't seen anything since The Other Boleyn Girl, and we all know how I feel about THAT movie.

  9. 1. Stuff by Elizabeth Berg. I just finished Year of Pleasure. Also, this is not "chick lit" but David Rakoff's books are funny and he has a crazy vocabulary which helps mine keep it's edge.

    2. As for the tunes, I'm going through this really weird tranformation into a fan of the country and western music (trust me, this is new territory for me) and so I cannot be of assistance.

    3. As for movies, are you looking to rent, because in that case I must recommend Lars and The Real Girl. We also just saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which I totally loved. And Iron Man is FANTASTIC! Oh, this isn't a movie, but The Long Way Round is something that I'm pretty sure you'd love. Plus, very cute men.

  10. i don't do the chick lit, so.. uh.. no help.

i like extra cheesy girl-power music to work out to, like avril and kelly clarkson and no doubt and YES, miley cyrus, or even evanescence when the beat is strong/fast enough..

300 if you haven't seen it yet. uh... drawing a blank here... i haven't seen a lot of movies recently, i guess..

  11. Read Waltzing the Cat by Pam Houston. You will love her for her vulnerability and also for her strength (COURAGE - I love this, by the way). She is one of my favorite writers... just beautiful.
